a snooped pleasure: "a sh*tload of hot chips"
chats with copywriter and fellow greyhound adorer, Sarah Marriott
Two things dawned on me a while back. First, that I am surrounded – absolutely swarmed – by incredible, talented, creative individuals who themselves are these distinct pleasures in my life. Second, the part of my former work I miss the most is asking quickfire questions and gaining inspiration via their in-the-moment answers. I love to know what people eat and drink, where they go for a tipple, who their favourite artists and authors are. Basically, I’m a snoop.
This is my way of re-filling this hole. A Mad Libs-ish approach that I hope becomes regular. I hope this becomes a way for you to embrace your own quirks and desires. Because that is the most exciting part of all – no two sets of answers will ever be exactly the same.
I’ve been thinking about Denise’s offhand comment from the last edition, summing up this little project better than I could. “Creatives on the internet,” the best freebie she’s ever found. The heart and soul of this sub-branch, a place to collect and commune, gathering the friends I’ve made and those I admire, whether we’ve met in real life or not.
Today’s subject falls into the latter category. I met Sarah Marriott via a business course for copywriters that made me finally take myself and my work seriously. Through Zoom sessions, Slack chats and then back-and-forth Instagram DMs, I’ve gotten to know this ‘social media’ side of Sarah – including a shared love of our rescue greyhounds. For this is the internet at its best, linking corners of the country and the globe, connecting and finding the like-minded in the most unexpected places.
So here we dig deeper. Because it’s our quirks and the things often unseen that mark us as individuals, making each day a new adventure, particularly when you’re armed with questions.
Thanks for joining me x
Give me your 3-sentence spiel (please)?
Ahoy! I’m Sarah. I’m a freelance brand messaging strategist + copywriter. I have recently niched into writing website copy for creative service providers. I'm a former graphic designer, so I’m a visual person and love translating this into words.
Pleasure is feeling like nothing has to be done, and you have nowhere to be.
I'd spend my last $50 on a sh*tload of hot chips.
The best thing I've ever bought is my Kathmandu winter jacket. It’s the comfiest thing and I can’t live without it.
A moment I'll remember forever... When I did a solo trip to Europe + Scandinavia in my 20s and was standing in front of the Hallgrimskirkja church in Reykjavik, Iceland. I couldn’t believe my eyes that I was so far away from home and I was having the best time of my life.
A meal I always look forward to... green chicken curry.
My dream day looks like being on holiday, eating good food and the only thing I have to worry about is what cocktail I’m going to order.
Three small things I noticed today... I really only noticed one thing today, and that’s I’ll be 40 soon enough. 😱
The last photo I took:
Reptar Cereal! IYKYK.
My greatest secondhand purchase is my rescue greyhound Rosie.
I always open emails when they’re from Alex Cattoni + The Copy Posse.
On my desk or in my most creative space, I'm surrounded by a small metallic blue skull figurine my friend gifted me, and a card with a drawing of Savage Garden I bought from a market that says “you’re sweet like a chica-cherry cola”.
A scent that transports me to the 90s is The Spice Girls Impulse deodorant spray, which I cannot find anywhere anymore, but I still dream about it.
When I'm lost for inspiration, I step away from the computer and brainstorm on paper, whether that's for work or to journal my thoughts.
I listen to true crime and supernatural podcasts while I work.
To 'touch the grass,' I love going for a walk to the park to clear my head.
The job I dream of having/doing is... I would have loved to be a music video director, but copywriter is a close second.
Connecting with others means knowing you’re not alone and that others resonate with your crazy thoughts.
The highest point of my day is…Really, it should be having dinner with my partner, watching Masterchef, but I think it’s my morning coffee.
MY TOP 5 PLEASURES
Cuddling my dog when she signals me to pat her.
A hot coffee on a cold morning + a chocolate for afternoon tea.
Getting lost in a captivating story, whether it’s a film or a podcast (I’m actually not much of a book reader).
Waking up from a refreshing nap on a Sunday afternoon.
Having a juicy conversation with a friend.
xoxo
LOVE! Two of the cleverest creatives 🤝🏼
